Our practice is here to support you from the moment your new pet joins your family.

Book an appointment for a peace-of-mind check up of your new bundle of fluff!

Preventative healthcare such as vaccinations and parasite medications can help protect your pet.  We can discuss your pet and their lifestyle to establish the most appropriate treatments for them. At VH we provide veterinary care for the individual – it is not ‘one size fits all’.

Take a look at the Veterinary Hospital Care Plan which can help to spread the cost of these measures over the year.

Vaccination Appointments

Vaccination is a way that we can help protect against some of  the infectious diseases which may affect your pet. Some vaccines require annual boosters to maintain immunity, whereas others offer longer protection – we follow the WSAVA Vaccination Guidelines recommendations and are happy to discuss vaccination protocols and individual requirements.

At the time of vaccination your pet will receive a general health check with advice offered on appropriate parasite treatment. Let us know if they need a nail trim, and we can help with that at the same appointment.

DOGS can be routinely vaccinated against Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus. Puppies need an initial course of two injections, from 6 weeks of age. Some boarding and doggy day care facilities also require a ‘Kennel Cough’ (bordetella) vaccination as well, which can be administered as droplets up the nose, or by injection. Pets who travel abroad will also need protection against Rabies.

CATS can be vaccinated against Cat Flu’ and Enteritis and Feline Leukaemia with first dose given from 9 weeks of age.

RABBITS can be protected against Myxomatosis and multiple strains of Viral Haemorrhagic Disease RVHD1 and RVHD2. Annual boosters are needed to maintain protection.

Parasite prevention – fleas, worms, ticks, mites….

There are a range of parasites which can affect your pet and potentially your family members – so appropriate preventative treatments are recommended to keep everyone safe. The individual requirements will depend on your pet and their lifestyle.

Book a free Parasite Consultation for a check-up, weight check and discussion about appropriate treatments. There is no charge for the consultation itself, you just pay for any medications or written prescriptions required.

Preventative Surgery

Neutering can prevent unwanted pregnancies as well as reducing the risk of certain diseases and conditions in some pets. Book an appointment for a free pre-neuter consultation to discuss the procedure, timings, risks and benefits for your pet.

Preventative surgery is undertaken at both practices where fully equipped operative theatres and experienced staff make the experience as calm and as safe as possible.

All pets can become poorly during their lifetime and at VH we are well equipped to investigate, diagnose and treat most illnesses.

Diagnostics

Radiology – we have a state-of-the-art digital x-ray machine suitable for tiny pets up to giant dogs.

Ultrasonography – our veterinary specific ultrasound machine takes details images of soft tissues in real-time, to aid diagnosis.

Fibre-Optic Endoscope, Bronchoscope and Rhinoscope – These are used regularly to examine the inside of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract, and to take essential samples to aid diagnosis. These valuable machines can also be used as an alternative to surgery in certain patients with gastric or respiratory foreign bodies.

In-house laboratory – well equipped with a multitude of machines, our comprehensive laboratory and dedicated lab nurses means many samples can be ran in-house, resulting in very short wait times for test results

  • Biochemistry (blood samples)
  • Haematology (blood counts)
  • Imagyst AI Cytology machine for fine needle aspirates, skin and ear cytology
  • Imagyst Urinalysis analyser
  • Coagulation Machine for measuring blood clotting times
  • I-Stat for blood gas analysis

Where samples need more extensive testing at an external lab, we have a dedicated courier each day to avoid delays with the post.

Surgery

Our well equipped surgical theatres and experienced staff with additional qualifications in surgery mean we can undertake both soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures at VH.

We are a primarily first opinion practice with lots of experience but are not specialist surgeons. We are very honest about our capabilities and referral to a specialist centre may be recommended if a procedure is not within our skill-set and would be in your pet’s best interest.

Some commonly performed procedures at VH include:

Soft Tissue: including Neutering,  Total Ear Canal Ablations, Tumour excision and reconstruction, Pyometra, Thyroidectomy, Abdominal surgery, BOAS surgery.

Orthopaedics: Fracture repairs, Amputations, MMP and Lateral Suture techniques for cruciate ligament insufficiency,  Patella Luxation correction, Ligament repair.

And many more!

Cardiology referrals:  Susana, our Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Cardiology accepts referrals of patients with poorly hearts. Experienced and efficient, she performs echocardiography, real time ECG and Holter ECG monitoring (to observe heart activity over a few days) and chest radiology.

Inpatient Care

At The Veterinary Hospital, we have qualified staff on-site at the 24/7, ensuring your pet is cared for overnight and on weekends if they are an inpatient in our hospital. In addition, if your pet has had an overnight stay or surgery with us, you can contact our out-of-hours nurse and vet for advice and support if needed for 1 week following the procedure, providing peace of mind without the need to contact the emergency vet. Be sure to note our current out-of-hours contact number when your pet is discharged.

For any other emergencies or concerns unrelated to recent surgery, our partners at VetsNow are available to assist you.

Our nurses run their own clinics to support pets in Weight Management, Ageing pet checkups, Blood Pressure, Adolescent health checks, Klaser treatments for pain, Wound management, Nutritional advice, microchipping and more.

Preventative cleanings and surgical dental treatment are undertaken in our Dental Suite, with digital dental x-rays always available to help the vets understand what is going on underneath the gum line and treat it most effectively.

Whether going on a holiday to France with your dog or exporting your cat for a new life down-under, navigating the complexities of pet exports and travel can be complicated. Here at the VH we have several vets who are registered as OVs (Official Veterinary Surgeons), trained to certify the essential export documentation for your pet.

Animal Health Certificates can be issued for travel within the EU – please see the following advice note.

We also have two OV-66 vets, who have the additional certification to complete the identification procedures for dog and cat export to Australia. Please Get in Touch for more specific advice.

Wellness clinics for older pets can spot age-related conditions at the first signs, to allow management to begin at the earliest opportunity. Problems related to age include challenges with mobility such as osteoarthritis, cognitive decline, and changes affecting the kidneys, all of which are best managed when spotted early.

Osteoarthritis treatment is not limited to just medications, with our team offering Acupuncture and KLaser therapy as adjunctive treatments for sore joints.
